Catherine Howe explores and explodes the myth of ‘female as goddess’ by readdressing contemporary notions of beauty, female desire and pleasure. Traditionally understood as the object of the male gaze, Howe reanimates the historical “feminine figure” with a new sense of self. Playing with historical and allegorical references, the Artist may interpret or misinterpret meanings at will to create her own contextualized contemporary meaning. She looks back to identify with female souls, acting as a collector of cultural fragments, discovering new ways of viewing herself from the inside out.
