Exploring the margins between reality and mythical realms, Kate Clark's sculptures at once disconcert and attract the viewer. Creating a synthesis of human and animal in a single form, Clark's work is believable and yet impossible to comprehend as authentic. Human head morphs into exotic animal body; Her tamed faces, man's own face, is a mirror reflecting safety, gentility and cultivation. Initially, these forms can be shocking or repelling as the viewer both recognizes and rejects their presence. Clark leaves visible the seams in her works, reminding the viewer that the exotic and wild has been undone to construct gentle and contemplative portraits. The artist asks us to embrace contradiction and question man's traditions and values. One can seek out themselves in the vulnerability of expression, while confronting a shifting and uncertain relationship with the underlying violence sheathed beneath a guise of control.
