Visual artist Barbara Earl Thomas - former student of Jacob Lawrence in Seattle - pays homage to the master with four specially created works:
In the autumn of 2025, Kunsthal KAdE will present the first-ever retrospective in Europe of the African-American artist Jacob Lawrence (1917-2000). Lawrence's breakthrough came in 1941 with his iconic series of paintings, " The Great Migration ," a 60-panel series, half of which hangs in the Museum of Modern Art in New York and half in the Phillips Collection in Washington. In it, he tells the story of the mass migration of the Black population from the American South to the North. Throughout his oeuvre, Jacob Lawrence placed African-American history at the center. He developed his own distinctive painting style in the aftermath of the Harlem Renaissance and is considered one of the most important African-American painters of the 20th century .
