Microaggressions and blatant sexism are experienced by virtually every Black woman, but especially in professional environments. The expectations for Black women’s appearance and disposition are often driven by othering and a desire to diminish their presence in the workplace and society at large. I didn’t recognize you, you changed your hair and Existing in a positively negative space serves as visual reactions to these notions, since often, the recipients of comments on grooming and posture must temper their emotions for the sake of self-preservation.
